Today was
very fruitful day, it was dedicated to design literature I had to read my peer
blog on female beauty. The blog talks about how female are been portrayed in media
especially women magazine. The notion of perfect size, shape and height equals
to perfect bodies, my question will be “to whom”?
I find it
scary that this has influence how women view themselves amongst their circle of
friends. The image above sourced from Glamour magazine simply proves this, by
looking at the figure on your left “so called perfect body” and how she looks
at the other women on the right. I have also have personally experience this
kind of behavior amongst my female friend and how they turn to be brutal amongst
each other about how they look. The comments that will be raised on this topic will
include male common views, comments like “not
wanting to be you” or “your man will
leave you for a skinny women”.
Media
platform have so much power on us as species and the way we do things and how
to carry ourselves. It is hard for little girl who grow up under these kind of
influence, and what it has on them psychological. I think we need to look at
our media platform with open mind and be able to see what is good for us and
what is not.

Where do you stand on this issue? How do you suppose we can influence a change using design?
ReplyDeleteDesigners need to be suggestive towards clients and try to persuade client’s views to move away from the notion of stereotypes. Designer hold so much power in visual transformation, we need to design authentic designs that will embrace not to discriminate.
ReplyDeleteI have to say that these images not only influence women, but men as well. We also end up setting impossible standards for women to live up to because of what we are exposed to by the media. The media is creating an image of the "perfect woman" one so perfect it doesn't exist yet, its feeding of women's insecurities.
