How social television influences social networks

Nielsen Media Research is one of the best global research companies when it comes to collect data on specific demographics; one of them is how advertising rates are influenced by factors such as age, gender, race, economic class and area.

The observation that I have looked at for my research paper on influences of the digital era was on how social networks are influenced by television series. When looking at trending post on social networks they mostly associated with some sort of television program. The traffic starts to increase on social networks when popular shows or series are aired. People start to post and have a debate about the content watched. Figures state that 41 percent of tablets owners and 38 percent of Smartphone owners use their device daily while in front of their TV screen (Social media report 2012).

Twitter is now considered as the ‘Social TV King’ because of the quick, frequent, real time interaction which is perfect for viewers to react to programming as the event occurs (Live TV). The social integration occurs everywhere all over the world. During this interaction people contribute purely on social networks, some television show have website for fans to interact. Viewers like to talk about TV shows and social networks use this platform to make the viewer experience more meaningful.

The content posted during social television is either positive or negative towards the character on the show. Many television stars has been cyber bullied on these social platforms by their “fans” or “haters” as they will say. The content is quite explicit as viewers take the platform to raise their views on celebrity lifestyles. Its’ sad, but those negative comments start to haunt the celebrities. Words hurt. Imagine if it was you.
What would you say?

  1. I too am guilty of airing my thoughts on twitter about shows that I watched because I am that passionate about them and strangely enough these show sometimes effects my emotions. I even hash-tag the name of the show or a contestant I like on the show to see what other people are thinking. As for celebrities being cyber bullied, I think they are getting exactly what they signed up for. Living your life in the limelight automatically means people are going to judge you and have opinions about you, good and bad.
